University Heights title reflects a dual nature: the home of City University of New York (CUNY) via Bronx Community College located near the top of Manhattan and the lower Bronx. Currently, the area is cut off from the Bronx and the larger city by Metro North lines and the Major Deegan Expressway, made up of largely industrial properties and low-income housing. However, there is a rising hope for University Heights. This past fall, the Urban Land Institute outlined development possibilities for the area. With a Metro North stop, easy access to the 4 and 1 trains subway lines, and close proximity to Manhattan, commuters looking for low rent housing could find a quietly gentrifying area with City support. Five-six story buildings already rise above the town and multi-unit houses featuring a unique look, with rounded corners and circular architecture defying the stereotypical Manhattan square towers. University Heights also features cultural and communal centers. The Hall of Fame For Great Americans at the Bronx Community College houses original busts of significant contributors to American history, while the Roberto Clemente State Park, named after the first Latino star inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame, offers tremendous resources to the local community: an Olympic pool, sports facilities, and playgrounds are rounded off by a waterfront boardwalk. The street-level bustling and community feeling is still missing due to the overbearing Expressway, but that is something Mayor De Blasio’s administration may mitigate by repositioning some roads and driving a pro pedestrian environment.
