Marine Park is a residential neighborhood on Jamaica Bay in Brooklyn, bordered by Gerritsen Avenue, Flatbush Avenue, Avenue U and Kings Highway. Its namesake park of nearly 800 acres is in the southern area of the neighborhood, just on the water. This safe and family-friendly Brooklyn neighborhood seems set to stay that way. Demographically, the area has been an Irish Catholic district for decades, and little has changed. Several Catholic schools are located here, and the neighborhood celebrates several Catholic traditions throughout the year, such as festivals and parades. The population also includes Italian and Greek groups. The civic association for Marine Park has a catchy motto: Improve, Don’t Move. And residents seem to be doing just that, keeping the neighborhood tight-knit and friendly. Most of the social life centers around the amenities provided by the park, like the golf course and cricket grounds. Flatbush Avenue is the strip for shopping, with a diverse array of groceries, goods and restaurants. Kings Plaza is home to bigger shops like Old Navy, H&M and Macy’s. It is the largest shopping center in Brooklyn, and also serves as a bus hub. Marine Park is undoubtedly isolated for those without a car, as no subways stop in the area. There are two express buses that serve the area, however. By Merritt Duncan
