Elmhurst is a sprawling, solidly middle-class neighborhood in Queens, sharing borders with Jackson Heights and Rego Park. Elmhurst is home to the enormous Queens Center shopping mall, located near the equally enormous and hectic Queens and Woodhaven boulevards. It even boasts its own Chinatown further east on Broadway, teeming with Asian groceries and supermarkets reflecting the nearly 40 percent Chinese, Southeast Asian, and Korean ethnicity of the area. That’s one aspect of the Elmhurst experience. Oversized, frenzied, mall-inflected mid-rise apartment complexes. Then there’s the Elmhurst radiating off of Elmhurst Avenue and bordering on Roosevelt Avenue. Its largely South- and Central American population holds cultural and culinary sway, and Roosevelt Avenue bustles with restaurants, specialty grocers, fruit and vegetable markets, butchers and businesses largely catering to the Hispanic community. Once you cross Roosevelt and wander down Elmhurst Avenue, things get quiet and residential. Nicely-maintained six-story brick apartment buildings and detached single-family wooden houses reinforces the neighborhood’s wholesome, residential environment. Elmhurst is home to one of the most ethnically diverse populations in the city. The residents are quite active in their concern for their community, as evidenced by the generally first-rate quality of area’s public schools (note to young families - some of the best in the city), clean streets and the safety of the neighborhood, guarded by the transparent presence of a simpatico and somewhat homegrown police force. Elmhurst should be on any one’s go-to list if the requirements are unpretentious affordability, neighborhood stability, convenience, safety and gastronomic adventure. There aren’t many other areas in NYC that can boast of all these attributes within the same location. By Ken Hamberg
