Ridgewood is a residential neighborhood in Queens, sharing borders with Glendale and Maspeth in Queens, and the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Bushwick (which it was once part of) and East Williamsburg. There’s a lot of next-hot-neighborhood chatter about Ridgewood lately, due to its proximity to the aforementioned hipster bastions and its more-Brooklyn-than-Queens appearance; some established residents express open anxiety relating to a youthful invasion and colonization in the near future. Considering the charming, architecturally stimulating (and intact) appearance of the area, affordable rents, convenient shopping, and proximity to some of the cooler parts of Brooklyn and lower Manhattan, their concern may be well founded. I discovered the essence of Ridgewood’s vibe in the streets between Forest Avenue and Fresh Pond Road. There are blocks and blocks of beautifully preserved row houses, featuring stunningly-detailed stonework and enormous bay windows that would enthrall any curious tourist – imagine living in one! The streets are largely tree-lined, clean and tranquil, and there is a sense that not much has changed here since the buildings were first constructed. The neighborhood vibe is safe, quiet, and solidly working- and middle-class family-oriented, with a unique flavor to the area deriving from a large eastern European presence, particularly Polish. There are lots of ethnic grocers, butchers and restaurants on Forest Avenue interspersed with local chain stores; most of the noise and bustle is found on busy Fresh Pond Road and farther up in the Myrtle Avenue business center developments. Off of these thoroughfares the pace is slow and the atmosphere is tranquil. Ridgewood is a truly unique part of the city; stable, unpretentious and often beautiful. It was cool way before the buzz.
